The Smith and Coates children’s collection is made from felted recycled cashmere by Sarah Coates. Adult sweaters are beautifully transformed into stylish kids pieces. Each item is hand embellished with vintage fabric trim and crochet work. A summer line is available too with a range of tops, dresses and trousers made from second hand cotton shirts.

One of my favorite holiday creations that I made this year were mostly by accident. I felted a ton of recycled wool sweaters and made ornaments. I was cutting away making shapes and ended up with tons of little circles which I then strung onto medium gauge wire. To finish I just twisted the wire with pliers and covered with some of the circles.

I love the finished product and plan on making more of these little wreaths, perhaps in a single color too.

Pluckyfluff is the creative brainchild of pioneering hand yarn spinner Lexi Boeger from Placerville, California. The recipient of a bachelor’s degree in fine art from UC Davis, author Lexi Boeger is the founder of Pluckyfluff.com, a website for unusual handspun yarns and fiber art.

Lexi is an amazing innovator of new, non-traditional spinning techniques and inclusions in the yarn. Her gorgeous handspun yarns are a notable contribution to new urban craft culture. She is also the author of “Intertwined: The Art of Handspun Yarn, Modern Patterns and Creative Spinning” a new release from Quarry Books. She has previously self-published “Plucklyfluff Handspun Revolution.”

Some of her colorful yarns contain tinsel, shredded paper, vintage fabrics, recycled sari silk, small toys, feathers, ribbon, sequins, candy wrappers, plastic flowers and more. These gorgeous yarns are perfect for a unique knitting, crocheting or weaving project and can be purchased on her site.

Denverite Nina Sampsel is a wizard-ess with reclaimed wool. She whips up fanciful, storybook objects from every form of the recycled textile. Her work can be found at Show of Hands in Cherry Creek Denver, Colorado.

Environmentally conscious Danish fashion label Ecouture by Lund creates stunning clothing from sustainable materials without compromising design and quality. Ecouture by Lund was established in Copenhagen in 2003 by the designer Johanne Helger Lund. Johanne studied design in Barcelona. Through the years, she has worked in theatre, film, and TV – both as a designer, costumier, and set designer. In 2003, she made the leap from the world of theatre to the fashion industry, and started Ecouture by Lund. Every piece of her fantastic label is so wearable!

The environmental line Nixxi from Vancouver, BC uses fabrics from fibres grown without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and from fast-growing renewable crops.  The versatile line offers knits and wovens made from organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, soy, lyocell, organic wool, silk, and linen. The patterns are structural yet draping with strong silhouettes with an edgy contemporary look. Nixxi is mindful of the manufacture and works exclusively with a local Canadian production house that employs fair wages.
