UK’s Laura Cahill began using second hand books after doing research into common unwanted objects. One of the most common unwanted objects that can be found at either thrift shops and flea markets are books. The glue in old books makes them extremely difficult to recycle. So she started to turn the second hand books she was collecting, into desirable objects such as furniture, lighting and ornaments. The result are lovely 3D forms in undulating cylinder shapes.

Friedemann Bühler’s thin-walled bowls and vases are of wood collected from forests near his house. He carefully selects the best pieces and shapes them into rough forms on the spot.

Relying at times on traditional tools, he makes objects that assume either a soft asymmetrical form or small cracks and breaks. He then uses a variety of other techniques to create their unique final appearance: texturizing, bleaching, staining, lacking, and oiling.

Through brushing and sandblasting, the textile of the wood serves to texture the structures. The long process results in unique pieces and small series of simple elegance and timelessness.
