This Halloween I am kind of obsessed with mythological half human, half animal themes….

I like the idea of dressing as a animal human hybrid or ambimorph. Here is a little hybrid mythology to read.

Satyr: half human half goat

Minotaur: half human half bull

Horus: half human half bird

Anubis: half human half jackal

Dracena: half human half snake

others are: naiad, faun, werewolf, cyclops, harpies, siren, triton, nagas, dogons.

Here are some other great ideas for homemade costumes-day of dead, mummy and heidi klum as skingirl ala Bodyworlds. Every great dane should be a fairy.

I stopped dead in my search tracks when I spotted the creative zeitgeist of remade that is Susan Lenz. I shuddered a spooky chill when reading that these fairy costume dresses are made from recycled cemetery flowers. Genius. Pure Halloween Genius. This recycling guru resides in South Carolina.

More recycled costume inspiration with this recycled version a Victorian gown made of cardboard, plastic bags, empty bottles, old batteries and magazines. This costume from the Mother Nature Network is made entirely out of recycled materials. Reel Green Media is an environmental consulting company for the entertainment industry, and they’ve put together a “green” costume campaign in an effort to help the movie industry reduce their environmental impact called Sustainable Sirens.

Students from Strode College’s Creative and Art & Design department created costume and fashion by recycling cardboard packaging. The project was celebrated in a catwalk show where students could model their creations. The cardboard creations included an Octopus, Shark, Warrior and ornate evening gowns.

Also some alternatives for giving out candy are sidewalk chalk, fifty-cent pieces, feathers and shells.

If you must do candy, then do natural or organic lollipops or organic chocolates.

Clif bars are also a great idea–the company now offers mini sizes that are perfect for Halloween. They come in “Spooky S’Mores” flavor with a Halloween-style wrapper with ghosts and goblins.
