The Book Eco Fashion by Sass Brown is a comprehensive look at the strongest trends in fashion design today: the expression of ecological, social and community consciousness in high fashion.

There are now a wide range of companies offering well designed merchandise, from one-off art, recycled and redesigned clothing, organic and sustainable textiles and garment production, to a range of community and indigenous support cooperatives bridging the gap between traditional craft and high fashion.

This book shows the range of companies making a difference in the area of sustainable design in fashion, exploding the myth that sustainable design is bad design, or at best basic design, by highlighting the range of companies producing desirable and well-designed apparel and accessories with a conscience. Emerging designer, H Fredriksson’s Swedish roots translate beautifully into her 100% eco-friendly designs. Her comfortable, organic pieces are feminine and timeless.

Leila Hafzi made her debut collection in Stavanger Norway in 1997 after a fateful trip to Nepal when she discovered her passion for having an ecological fashion label. Now, her show-stopping gowns are the ultimate eco couture.

She admits that her environmentally friendly production cycle is always a work in progress. Impressively her collections are made from draped silk chiffon crepe, silk satin, Eco Tex certified 100% pashmina yarns and hand loomed silk organza. This season’s collection achieved vibrant colors with the use of AZO free dyes in Nepal. These are the legal standard dyes in Europe, but most Asian countries don’t have that regulation and work with dyes that are extremely harmful to the workers’ health. For paler colors, she experiments with herbal Ayurvedic dyes to preserve the purity of the organic materials.

Environmentally conscious Danish fashion label Ecouture by Lund creates stunning clothing from sustainable materials without compromising design and quality. Ecouture by Lund was established in Copenhagen in 2003 by the designer Johanne Helger Lund. Johanne studied design in Barcelona. Through the years, she has worked in theatre, film, and TV – both as a designer, costumier, and set designer. In 2003, she made the leap from the world of theatre to the fashion industry, and started Ecouture by Lund. Every piece of her fantastic label is so wearable!

Mod Green Pod is a wonderful design firm created by Nancy and Lisa Mims sisters in law, who wanted sustainable goods that were still great modern designs. They offer 100% organic fabrics & vinyl-free wallpaper. They definately are “taking organic from hippie to hip”. Their debut line is called the Jubilee Collection. See it here.
